Two-Face, real name Harvey Dent, was intended to be a possible antagonist in early drafts for Batman Returns before he was omitted completely. He would have been played by Billy Dee Williams, who played a pre-disfigured Harvey Dent in Tim Burton's 1989 film Batman.
Biography[]
In early drafts of the script for Batman Returns, Harvey Dent was to be electrocuted and disfigured by Selina Kyle/Catwoman, which would scar half his face. This could have set up his role as the main antagonist of a potential third Tim Burton Batman movie. But this idea was scrapped and instead Dent was replaced with original character Max Shreck who would end up being shocked (but killed) by Catwoman. When Joel Schumacher was appointed as director of the sequel Batman Forever by Warner Bros, he opted to instead recast Harvey Dent/Two-Face with Tommy Lee Jones, despite the two different races of both actors.
Trivia[]
- Billy Dee Williams would voice Two-Face in the 2017 animated film The Lego Batman Movie, with the character based on his likeness.
- The Billy Dee Williams' incarnation of Harvey Dent would later be used in the Batman '89 comic book series, which served as a direct continuation of Batman and Batman Returns. In the comic Dent would become Two-Face. The comic series ignored Schumacher's sequel movies Batman Forever and Batman and Robin, with the two films being placed in a separate continuity from Tim Burton's, which was further reinforced with the 2023 film The Flash.
