Rabbids are a species of chaotic lagomorph characters that originated from the Rayman series before eventually starring in their own solo franchise. They debuted in the video game Rayman Raving Rabbids as the main antagonistic faction which had gone through many changes during its development.

History[]

According to an early plot for Rayman Raving Rabbids, the Rabbids were once innocent critters that roamed the Glade of Dreams until the constant abuse and discrimination by other creatures caused them to retreat underground. They gradually grew to resent their tormentors so much that they went insane and spent decades preparing to take their revenge. The Rabbids eventually emerged with war machines to terrorise the inhabitants of the Glade (such as Teenies, as seen in a early trailer for the game) until only Rayman stood to oppose them.

As enemies, Rabbids would have originally come in at least two types, normal Rabbids and Zombie Rabbids. Zombie Rabbids resembled the normal ones but had fur that was more dense in comparison. Both Zombie Rabbids and the Rabbid backstory were removed from the final release, but they, among other elements, were reused for the Game Boy Advance version of the game.

Early trailer footage for Rayman Raving Rabbids had shown that Rabbids would have appeared in great numbers and Rayman would have to mesmerise them by dancing to various genres of music. Every Rabbid had different tastes in music, so Rayman would have to switch up genres by changing his outfit to appeal to each one. His performance would determine how successful he would have been in mesmerising the Rabbid hoards. In some situations, Rayman would be challenged to a dance-off by a Rabbid captain. These Rabbids were larger than regular ones and would try to outperform Rayman to win over the crowds. If Rayman succeeds in befriending the Rabbids, he would be free to either attack them without the fear of being overwhelmed or use them to enter areas he would not normally have access to.

Dataminers had discovered that many features used in earlier versions of the game were still present in it's final build. If Rayman is hacked into certain mini-game environments with the free movement he has in the coliseum hub, Rabbids would become hostile and will try to attack him. Rayman can fight them by enabling abilities he is unable to use in the final game, which reveals that not only can the Rabbids be defeated, but whatever weapons they were carrying can be picked up and used against other Rabbids. Unused data also revealed that Rabbids could be ridden as a mount, which might explain how Rayman would have originally used them to access certain areas.

On December 24th 2022, the source code for Rayman Raving Rabbids was leaked online which shows more scenarios originally intended for the game. In the build, another Rabbid enemy that resembles the character Serguei from the game's final release, albeit smaller, appears in a unused underwater base level.

Notable Rabbids[]

Jabbit[]

Jabbit is the morbidly obese emperor of the Rabbids that parodies Jabba the Hut from the Star Wars series and stereotypical depictions of ancient corrupt Roman emperors. He watches Rayman participate in "blood sports" at the coliseum for his amusement and is holding Rayman's love interest, Simohne, hostage.

Pink[]

Pink, also known as Lapin Terminator, is a robotic Rabbid with pink fur that hides it's mechanical body and glowing red eyes underneath. It actually appeared in the game's final release and the Game Boy Advance version, although it's design is different in the former. Pink was apparently a boss that would have fought Rayman in it's four-legged mech, allowing the Rabbid to shoot streams of fire and quickly evade the hero's attacks. Pink is also armed with a carrot-firing machine gun and can use a charge attack if it is not piloting it's mech. Pink's metallic body would become partly or fully exposed if it receives enough damage and will explode upon it's defeat. Pink's voice audio is reused in the retail release for the robotic Dark Rabbid enemies.

Inspector Rabbid[]

Inspector Rabbid refers to a prison guard Rabbid that would have presumably tried to prevent Rayman from escaping the Rabbids' dungeons. He has a very unique appearance compared to other Rabbids, having blue fur and wearing some security guard attire.

Rabbid Variations[]

Zombie Rabbids[]

The Rabbids serve as the militaristic footsoldiers of their species. They come in different sizes and shapes as each of them so far in the prototype are hairy, fat, thin and ugly while the other ones being blue and fashionable only appear in Making a Rabbid. They can also carry weapons like a wrench, a blaster or a rifle and can ride on their vehicles or creatures. They can get hypnotized whenever Rayman dances with them. When they get defeated, they will retreat back to the underground. The bigger versions of themselves are shown after consuming a Lum off-screen and when defeated, they will return to normal size with the Lum to be rescued by Rayman.

Rabbid Boucher[]

Rabbid Bouchers are burly white Rabbid enemies that resemble smaller versions of the character Serguei in the game's final release. Unlike Serguei, Rabbid Brutes do not wear masks but appear have a large nose ring instead. They do not carry weapons in combat and once knock down Rayman can use their weight to activate switches in order to progress through the game. This variation does appear as a reoccurring boss in the Game Boy Advance version, which is way different than the console release, being a platformer like the DS version rather than a minigame collection the console version eventually became.

Boxing Rabbid[]

Boxing Rabbids are another variant of the Rabbids that have a brute-like appearance compared to the other Rabbids. They have a pair of boxing gloves to punch to attack Rayman when he is too close but they will also be kept in check by the other Rabbids holding them in leashes. This variation also appears in the Game Boy advanced version, but is also different from the console release and is displayed as a normal enemy but will still attack Rayman by punching him with their boxing gloves.

Timid Rabbid[]

Timid Rabbids are smaller versions of Serguei, in fact, they look identical to them, and were going to appear as higher-ranked minions of Jabbit. Some of these were going to take the role of jailers while others watched over Jabbit’s lodge.

Rabbids' War Machines[]

Rabbid Ship[]

The Rabbid Ship is a large tank-like robot that resembles a Rabbid with a cycloptic eye. According to early trailers for the game, Rabbid Ships would emerge from the ground and destroy the surrounding area by firing lasers from its eye. It also seemed to be used as a form of transportation that can carry many Rabbids. In the game, the Rabbid Ship will target Rayman if he approaches it and fire a laser at him or launch multiple energy blasts from each of its "hands". If Rayman tries to move away from the Rabbid Ship, it will follow him.

Giant Bipod[]

A Giant Bipod can be seen stomping around near a village on the game's open world map. If it spots Rayman, it will stare at him for a moment before firing a laser from it's eye. Rayman can crawl up it's gigantic body while riding a spider to reach a hatch located on top of the machine. If the bipod is loaded onto what appears to be a muddy bog environment, Rayman can destroy it by going through the hatch and fighting the Rabbids inside the bipod to find and dispose it's power source.

Rabbid Airship[]

A Rabbid Airship can be found flying around on the open world map. If Rayman gets too close to it, Rabbids will use ropes to climb down from it and attack him.

UFOs[]

UFOs are flying vehicles used by Rabbids to pursue or flee from Rayman. In the 2022 source code leak, the player can make UFOs appear in big swarms around Rayman although they do not harm him. One Rabbid will also pilot a UFO to try and escape with a caged creature, firing carrot-like missiles at Rayman and launching explosive mines from behind if he chases the Rabbid. Rayman is able to drive a UFO but it can only glide across the ground due to it's unfinished programming.

Mini Robots[]

Mini Robots are another Rabbid enemy that are designed to form an electric attack when close proximity with one another and will explode when it is defeated. Rayman can use Mini Robots to destroy obstacles in his path.

Grappin Mini Robots[]

Grappin Mini Rabbids are a variant of the Mini Robots except they have hooks attached to them. Like their normal counterparts, the Grappin Mini Robots will form an electric attack when close to Rayman and explode when it is defeat, but the hooks will be used by Rayman to grab and put it at an obstacle when it explodes to destroy the obstacle.

Crawlers[]

Crawlers are spider tank-like machines used by the Rabbids most notably Pink. Like the Spiders, the Crawlers will be able to climb on walls and shoot out a large projectile. They will also be used by Rayman against the Rabbids.

Rabbid Scooters[]

Scooters are ground vehicles used by the Rabbids to also pursue or flee from Rayman. It shares the same function with the UFOs as it is designed to shoot out carrot missiles and launch explosive mines. They also go in an incredible amount of velocity then Rayman can use it to travel to any part of an area. Despite being called scooters, they run operated with anti-gravity technology.

Rabbids' Bases[]

Rabbid Den[]

Dens are one of the many bases constructed by the Rabbids following their invasion. Each of their structures in the forest serve as entrance to the den where Rayman must enter to rescue the caged creatures and teensies. Sometimes the Dens can also be used as prison cells as two of them are seen with shields.

Rabbids' Weaponry[]

Carrot Rifle[]

Carrot Rifles are rifles utilized and used by the Rabbids as their weapons. They are designed to shoot out carrot bullets at their opponent who gets in their way, including Rayman. Rayman can use this weapon to shoot at the Rabbids depending how much ammo it would have left.

Carrot Pistol[]

Carrot Pistols are pistols utilized and used by the Rabbids. They seemed similar to the Plunger Guns from the final version of Rayman Raving Rabbids, but their appearance is different. Like the Carrot Rifle, Rayman can use the Carrot Pistol against the Rabbids depending the ammunition it has left.

Branches[]

Branches are used as weapons by the Rabbids to strike against Rayman. While the branches are only yanked out from trees and not utilized since it is only made in nature, the Rabbids make good use of them to swing at or hit Rayman.

Wrenches[]

Wrenches are tools used by the Rabbids to craft their machinery. Like the branches, the wrenches are also used as weapons to arm themselves to strike at Rayman.
