~ Ales Mansay |
Mr. Dark was originally the main antagonist of Rayman Origins who would have attempted to bring order to the Glade of Dreams by instigating a war.
History[]
Back when Rayman Origins was going to be in episodic format, developer interviews stated that Mr. Dark's origins would be explored to explain how he became the supervillain seen in the first Rayman game. However, as development continued and the episodic idea was scrapped in favor of a full game release, it was decided that the Mr. Dark seen in the game would instead be The Magician trying to usurp the supervillain's mantle rather than being the original. Mr. Dark's appearance was apparently used as a basis for The Magician's design; shortening the character's hair and reducing the more exaggerated features of his clothing while keeping the same patterns on his nose. Despite this, The Magician would have still appeared in his Mr. Dark design at some points in the game.
According to the game's plot at the time, his real name is Ales Mansay (which is pig-latin for "Sales Man") whose poor performance at Magic School made him unpopular with other people. He grew to resent the Bubble Dreamer because his immature antics and nightmares were constantly putting the Glade of Dreams at risk. Because of this, he devised a plot to stop the Glade's carefree lifestyle and bring order to the world using an army of robots under the guise of Mr. Dark, whom Ales idolised. He hid a microphone at the sacred Snoring Tree where Rayman and his friends slept (which can still be seen in the retail release) in order to annoy the Land of the Livid Dead's cantankerous inhabitants and start a war that would benefit him. As The Magician, Ales would gather all the Lums that the Glade's heroes would collect on their quest to stop the war and use them to power his robotic creations and flying fortress at Moody Clouds.
Although much of the plot was scrapped, some elements of it are still used in the final release of the game. The Magician still uses the heroes to gather Lums for his own nefarious purposes, he is still shown to be a fan of Mr. Dark and it was confirmed by the game's head writer that The Magician was still trying to become Mr. Dark's usurper.
