He ultimately appeared in Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, played by Tony Leung.
History[]
Iron Man[]
In the initial draft of Iron Man, Mandarin was going to be the main villain of the film ccording to Jon Favreau and Jeff Bridges,. Kevin Feige revealed in an interview that early drafts of the film depicted the Mandarin as a younger individual, contemporary to Tony Stark, who would have business dealings with Stark Industries. However, this idea was scrapped in favour of letting Obadiah Stane as the main villain of the film.
The Avengers[]
The Mandarin was considered by Marvel Studios to be introduced in The Avengers alongside Shang-Chi in the post-credits scene as a tease for the Chinese market, but Beijing's development team shot down the idea as they didn't want the first Chinese character of the Marvel Cinematic Universe to be a villain.
Iron man 3[]
In the early draft of the film, it feature a true mandarin, before it was changed to Trevor Slattery and Aldrich Killian.
Trivia[]
- The main reason why this character was constantly being pushed back from appearing in live action is due to Chinese’s sensor towards the character, as the character was based on a stereotypical Chinese villain known as “Fu Man Chu”. This resulted Marvel forced to change the character drastically.
- In addition, Tony Leung was attacked by Chinese fans due to him playing the character upon the announcement from Marvel.
