Killua Zoldyck is the deuteragonist of the manga/anime series Hunter x Hunter. He's the middle child of the Zoldyck family who befriends Gon Freecss during the latter's quest to become a Hunter and find the whereabouts of his own father.
Although in the original manga series, as well as its 2011 anime adaptation, Killua, while extremely lethal, remains a heroic character who genuinely cares about Gon, in a scrapped fully original ending to the 1999 anime adaptation, Killua was intended to fall back into his homicidal ways, thanks to the influence of his father, Silva, and, after a timeskip, heading to Whale Island in order to assassinate Gon and his father, Ging.
He is voiced by Kanako Mitsuhashi and Annika Odegard in the English version.
Biography[]
Born into a wealthy family of assassins as the middle child of Silva and Kikyo Zoldick, Killua grew up sheltered from the outside world, being raised from childhood to become an assassin much like his father and his brothers. Because of this, Killua spent most of his early childhood alone, away from the contact with other children, as his family believed friendships were a distraction. The closest thing Killua had to a friend was a trainee butler of similar age by the name of Canary. Although she seemed to genuinely care about him, she was forbidden from actually befriending him as per Kikyo's orders.
On one day, Killua attacked his mother and ran away from home in order to participate in that year's Hunter Exam. After passing all the preliminaries, Killua reaches the lobby where the Exam was held. There, he meets a boy of the same age as him by the name of Gon Freecss, with the two quickly hitting it off and becoming best friends. Gon seeked to participate in the Exam in order to become a licensed Hunter himself, just like his father, Ging, whom Gon was determined to find the whereabouts of. Alongside Leorio and Kurapika, Killua becomes Gon's primary companion in his quest to find his father, with their bond strenghtening as the adventure continues.
Original 1999 Anime Ending[]
Due to the 1999 anime series catching up with the newly released manga chapters at the time, director Furuhashi Kazuhiro briefly considered concluding the series on episode 62 and giving it a fully original ending in order to wrap the anime up in a satsifying way. The ending, which would be set around the middle of the Yorknew City Arc, where the series currently was at the moment, would feature Kurapika finally hunting down and confronting the Phantom Troupe, killing each one of its members. In his climatic final battle with Chrollo Lucilfer, Kurapika would lose one of his scarlet eyes and be fatally injured in the process, leading to both of their deaths, with Kurapika dying in his friend, Leorio's arms.
After a seven year timeskip, Gon and Killua get separated, with Killua going back to his family while Gon continues his quest. Eventually, a 19 year old Gon manages to find Ging and go back to Whale Island with him, living together with his father, alongside his aunt Mito and Kite. Unbeknownst to him, however, Killua alongside his father Silva, get hired by an unknown third party to assassinate Ging Freecss, with the two heading to Whale Island to dispose of the legendary Hunter. After locating him, Silva and Ging both engage in a combat. The fight ends in Silva's death after he ripped his own heart out of his body (the circumstances behind this being currently unknown). Seeing his own father die before his eyes, Killua, now bloodlusted, decides to avenge his death and starts fighting with his now former best friend. During the battle, Gon is unable to bring himself to fight back against the man who he once considered his friend, instead opting to remain in defense the entire time, all the while Kite and his Aunt Mito watch the fight from afar. Gon's efforts are ultimately in vain as Killua ends up finishing off Gon by ripping heart out of his body, as Aunt Mito watches in horror seeing her nephew and foster child dying before her eyes, thus concluding the story of Hunter x Hunter.
The ending was allegedly rejected by Yoshihiro Togashi, likely due to its dark and pointlessly violent nature. Ultimately, the series would instead come to an end in the middle of the Yorknew City Arc, leaving right where the manga was at the time. Eventually, Hunter x Hunter would receive a reboot done by Madhouse Inc., which seeked to adapt the manga more faithfully and its subsequent unadapted story arcs.

Trivia[]
- Killua's fate in this ending could be taken as a dark paralel to his original counterpart, showing what he could have become had he never befriended Gon and let his homicidal nature utterly consume him.
- It's still unknown whether or not in this ending, Killua managed to successfully kill Ging after Silva's death as the leaked storyboards only show him immediately attacking Gon after seeing his dead father. It's possible that Ging could have survived or maybe even died offscreen from his wounds of his fight against Silva (hence why he's panting while holding onto his chest in the drawings).
- Yoshihiro Togashi has stated numerous times that he has various ideas for the end of the Hunter x Hunter manga and has yet to decide between which one of them he's going to go with. It's worth noting that the 1999 alternate ending was written without Togashi's supervision and it's also rumored that it was discarded because Togashi himself disapproved of it, meaning it's likely that none of its ideas will be implemented in the canon, official ending of the series.
