The Jabberwocky was intended to be a supporting antagonist from Disney's 13th full-length animated feature film Alice in Wonderland. He was to be a flying creature who was known for frequenting the forest where Alice gets lost after her disastrous unbirthday, but the character was written out because his scene was deemed too scary.

He was supposedly intended to be voiced by the late Stan Freberg.

Biography[]

The Jabberwocky was originally intended to appear in Alice in Wonderland during the "Beware the Jabberwock" song, which was based on Lewis Caroll's poem "Jabberwocky" and was going to be played after Alice left the disastrous tea party of the Mad Hatter and the March Hare, following her unbirthday but before reaching the castle of the Queen of Hearts. While walking through the Tulgey Wood, Alice would have met the Jabberwocky before meeting again with the Cheshire Cat. Both the song and the Jabberwocky itself were going to be performed by the late Stan Freberg.

Unfortunately, the Jabberwocky's inclusion was ultimately dropped after the studio realized that his appearance would be too scary and his sequence was replaced in favor of the sequence featuring the The Walrus and the Carpenter. However, out of a desire to keep the Jabberwocky poem in the finished film, it was decided to reuse the lyrics from the opening stanza of the "Jabberwocky" poem for the Cheshire Cat's song "Twas Brillig", replacing the Cheshire Cat's original song "I'm Odd". "Beware the Jabberwock" has nonethless been included in Disney DVD releases since 2004.

Trivia[]

  • Despite Disney's failure to include the Jabberwocky in the original 1951 animated classic, the Jabberwocky was included in the 2010 live-action remake by Tim Burton, where he was depicted as the champion servant of the Red Queen.
