Groo and Kyle are the original main protagonists in the first Despicable Me film who were not fully included in the final version of the film, as shown in the storyboards.
Biography[]
Judging by the storyboards, the plot is almost the same as in the final version of the film, with the exception of only the character designs, some scenes and one specific character.
Wanting to become the number one supervillain, Groo decides to go with his faithful assistant and friend Kyle to a secret base where the shrinking ray is located in order to shrink and get the moon itself. They successfully steal the ray and rejoice. However, their ship was penetrated by the claw of another ship and stole the ray from them. It was Vector, who, presumably, in revenge decided to steal the ray from Groo and become the number one supervillain himself. He begins to fly away from Groo and Kyle, but Groo orders his assistant to catch up with him and return the ray back. Kyle shoots at Vector, but he dodges the bullets. Then Gru fires missiles and nukes at Vector, but he defuses them. While mocking Groo's failure, Kyle approaches him close enough and Groo is ready to press the button to destroy Vector, and both show their sadistic smiles. But they fail, as Vector comes out of the ship with the beam, activates the beams and directs it at the heroes' ship. The ship begins to shrink, and Groo and Kyle try to escape from it, but they fail and both end up on a mini-ship. However, Groo does not want to let Vector go easily and demands Kyle to pursue him. Then, Groo jumps on the turbine and tries to get Vector, but he increases the speed even more and Groo flies back to the ship. Then Groo and Kyle hear sounds and realize that their ship is about to explode, which happens. Groo remains irritated and disappointed from his defeat, and Kyle offers him a cake. Kyle does not appear in further storyboards.
Next, Groo tries to get the shrinking ray by infiltrating Vector's fortress, but he never succeeds. He then sees the girls (Margo, Edith, and Agnes) delivering cookies on behalf of Miss Hattie's Orphanage. He notices that Vector is letting the girls through because they have his favorite cookies. Groo comes up with a plan. The next day, he comes to the Orphanage posing as Dr. Groo with a fake ID through Miss Hattie's computer. Groo then picks up the girls and brings them to his house, where he begins to explain the rules to them, what they can do, what they can't do, and how to introduce themselves, after which he leaves the girls alone.
Most likely, the subsequent events and ending were the same as in the final version of the film.
Personality[]
Groo[]
Overall, he is almost identical to his final version in the film. Perhaps the only difference is that this GRU is more sullen and gloomy both with the children and with his assistant and friend Kyle. Another possible difference is that he is more goal-oriented, since even after losing to Vector in a flight battle, he, in a mini-ship, tried to take the shrink ray from him.
Kyle[]
Kyle is a typical comic relief character: a short, overweight man with a bald head and a few comedic moments. In fact, he and Groo represent the "Tall and Fat" tone. However, Kyle has been shown to be tech-savvy and at least knows how to fly a ship, something Groo apparently does not know, despite it being his ship.
Description[]
Groo[]
Groo wears a dark gray coat, black gloves, gray pants, and black shoes. He has an oval face, a pointed nose, and black parted hair, which are his main differences from the final Gru (at least the latter had no hair). It also seems that he was originally intended to be of German descent. His pointy nose was clearly a nod to Vector, who had a bulbous nose in the storyboards.
Kyle[]
Kyle is an exact copy of the final Gru (or vice versa, to be correct). Their main difference is their height, because the final Gru is taller, and Kyle is short. It was shown that Kyle wore a black wool jacket, under which was a striped shirt, the same gray pants and rubber boots.
As you can see, he and Groo were combined into one famous character. However, there is a possibility that Kyle served as a prototype for Dr. Nefario.
