“ | God created the world in 7 days, it will only take me one to correct it. | „ |
~ Dr. Paul Elleson. |
Dr. Paul Elleson was set to be the main antagonist of the Sonic: The Movie, pitched in 1994. He is a scientist who was born without fingers and bullied for his disability. This drove him to villainy, searching for a way to alter the entire planet's biosphere's DNA to alter the world into a perfect, in his view, representation of it.
Biography[]
Past[]
Paul Elleson was born with no fingers on one hand, having to be content with crude metal prosthetic ones. Because of it, he was often teased as a child, and others felt they were lucky to have been spared such a tragedy. Paul grew embittered with the imperfect world and humanity's vices, seeking to change it. He attended Cambridge university, but dropped out and eventually was the first person to patent synthetic blood. Eventually, he was presumed dead for ten years, but really just went into hiding. He also had more efficient prosthetic fingers put in place of his old ones. He settled on a South American island where he experimented on wildlife, mutating them into more sentient creatures, though he ended up rejecting many of them. He presumably had at least one of his henchmen killed for refusing to work for him any further, forcing his daughter Amanda to live with the reject mutants.
Sonic: The Movie[]
Knowing of Dr. Hedgeson's achievements in DNA research, Elleson sent Face and two of his other goons to capture him. They successfully delivered the scientist to Elleson, who tried to persuade him to help him in his plans to "perfect" the world. Since Hedgeson didn't learn the true extend of Elleson's plans, he initially agreed to, since Elleson promised that he'd be released eventually.
Later, Hedgeson's son Jimmy, who had suffered a contamination with a liquid that made him transform into a human-hedgehog hybrid (later nicknamed "Sonic") during adrenaline rushes, arrived on the island and ended up in the rejects' village. On the day of his test, which would decide his fate, the village was ambushed by Elleson's henchmen, who tasked them to get ten live mutants to feed to his newer specimen. Jimmy/Sonic and Amanda were among the few who managed to escape.
Learning of an outsider on his island, Elleson killed the pilot who failed to capture him in anger. As he tasked Face with capturing Jimmy, one fo the captured mutants, Kentar (nicknamed "Knuckles" by Jimmy), offered to help them capture the intruder if Paul promised to leave the reject mutants alone, and a deal was struck. Meanwhile, Hedgeson learned not only of his son's presence, but also of Elleson's true plan: contaminating the entire biosphere with mutated DNA by launching it out of a volcano to morph all living beings, humans included, into more disciplined ones.
Sonic's raid on Paul Elleson's compound failed due to Knuckles tipping the villain off, with several mutants captured. After Face killed the village elder, Taticus, for refusing to tell where Sonic was, thus breaking Elleson's deal with Knuckles, the traitor had a change of heart and joined the heroes. During another raid, Sonic was ultimately captured and brought to Elleson, who was amazed by his ability to morph between a human and a hedgehog. He ran several tests, threatening Jimmy's father to force him to comply, and finally managed to complete the DNA model fit for his plan. He then attempted to feed the Hedgesons to a mutant, but they escaped. Sonic reached Elleson as he was trying to complete his plan, and a fight broke between them, during which the doctor mutated himself to be able to fight. Eventually, Sonic managed to redirect lava to melt the capsules with mutated DNA and caused an eruption, with Elleson presumably dying in it as he desperately tried to fix his experiment, while Sonic and his allies escaped. Whether Ellison truly died or not is unclear, as the movie was meant to be an "origin story", meaning he could be brought back for the sequel, or to tie into the games' storyline.

Trivia[]
- Though Elleson is supposed to be the movie's adaptation of Dr. Ivo "Eggman" Robotnik, he bears almost no resemblance to the original character, and is in fact only called "Robotnik" once in-universe.
