Doctor Neo Cortex is the main antagonist of Willy the Wombat, the initial concept of Crash Bandicoot. He is an evil scientist who seeks to take revenge on humanity and conquer the world due to the traumas he experienced in his childhood.
In the final project, he was voiced by the late Brendan O'Brien.
Biography[]
Cortex was born in a family of circus clowns. Ever since infancy, he enjoyed studying and suffered humiliation from his family who used him as part of their act. At the age of three, a group of clowns tattoed a capital "N", standing for "Nerd", on Neo's head. When Cortex was five, his family was mysteriously killed in a "freak" explosion caused by fireworks, which the owner of the circus, a war veteran, never used.
Cortex eventually attended the Oliver Noth High School, where he got acquainted with Nitrus Brio. The abuse continued even there, and eventually the school, and a huge chunk of the city, were destroyed by another "freak" explosion, which Cortex and Brio survived due to being far away in an old test bunker.
The duo kept travelling the world, and whenever they left a place, a series of explosions happened there. After the duo's exodus from Chernobyl in 1986, these accidents caught the attention of international organizations, and Cortex and Brio found themselves on the run from the law. To find a hiding place, the two acquired the Wumpa Islands, an archipelago near Australia. There, Neo Cortex started plotting for world domination. He and Brio began experimenting on local wildlife, uplifting them with the Evolvo-Ray and brainwashing them with the Cortex Vortex. Among their creations were Ripper Roo, Koala Kong, the brothers Kimodo and Kimono, Pinstripe and Willie the Wombat. Willie was planned to become the leader of Cortex Commandos, but was rejected after Cortex realized that he was did nothing but talk in movie references. Willie was cast out into the wild, and another mutant, Tawna, was prepared to be sent into the Vortex, which Willie sought to stop.
