Charles F. Muntz is the main antagonist of the 2009 Disney/Pixar animated film Up.

He was voiced by the late Christopher Plummer in the final project.

Alternate Endings[]

For the film's final ending, Muntz comes after Kevin, Doug, and Russel in Carl's house that his close to floating off his airship. However, Carl gets Kevin's attention with chocolate, and she leaps out the window with Dug and Russel hanging onto her, bumping into Muntz and escaping. Muntz angrily jumps out the window after him, but gets his foot caught in some balloon strings. The strings snap and Muntz falls into the ocean to his death.

However the producers had several ideas for what would be Muntz's fate before the final project:

  • As Muntz and Carl were fighting, Carl talks to him about having lost his wife, which would have lead to them bonding and Muntz redeeming himself. However, the producers couldn't think of what they would say to each other.
  • Carl and Russel lure Muntz into Kevin's maze with a balloon animal resembling her. Muntz takes the bait and is subsequently trapped for an eternity, while Carl and Russel escape. This was changed because it felt more like Muntz's ending than Carl's ending.
  • Carl and Russel use the same bait to lure Muntz int Carl's house as it's floating off the airship. This causes Muntz' dogs to all rush in as well, and the house floats away. This was changed because the producers felt that the house was symbolic for Ellie, and therefore didn't want to associate Muntz with Ellie.
  • As Muntz jumped out the window and his feet are tangled in balloon strings, as they are in the final ending, they float up to the sky and take Muntz with them. This was scrapped because the producers didn't want to entertain the possibility of there being a sequel with Muntz returning, so they made it certain that he was killed.
