Captain Blackeye was slated to be the main antagonist of the video game Dream before it was eventually reworked into Banjo-Kazooie.
Biography[]
When development for the game Dream: Land of Giants was moved to the Nintendo 64, developers at Rare Ltd (known then as RareWare) decided to shift the game's tone towards something more pirate themed. This version of the game, now only known as Dream, featured Captain Blackeye and his crew of misfits serving as antagonists, with their goal to conquer various territories more efficiently by building a ship that could fly across the world fueled on a substance called "Floatsy".
Captain Blackeye was meant to introduced to the player through a song sang by the character and his crew during a stop-motion animation. The song would have been about Blackeye's various acts of piracy.
However, as development continued, it felt as the game was becoming too ambitious and was reworked into what would eventually become Banjo-Kazooie. Many elements from Dream were dropped, including Blackeye and his crew, but pictures of Captain Blackeye can still be found in game's final build during the level "Mad Monster Mansion".
Personality[]
Captain Blackeye was meant to be a little dark but still humorous. He would have thought of himself as a grand and honorable individual despite being far from it and did not have the best reputation among his crew. He also seemed to be quite boastful about himself and his crimes.
